Imperfect - Illustration Friday August 5/2011
Inspired by the Illustration Friday quote:
"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it is better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring". - Marilyn Monroe
I read the quote over and over, an idea tickling the back of my mind like a sneeze that hasn't quite arrived - until today, when it occurred to me that jesters embodied the entire quote.
Often different physically, they dressed to stand out even more; the butt of jokes and the confidants of the powerful; japesters, jokesters, philosophers, mountebanks and scapegoats, they made an art of the ridiculous, found beauty in imperfection and split madness until within they found wisdom. I wonder if Marilyn ever saw herself this way...

Quite profound for a clown, and you're probably right, Marilyn probably did see herself that way. There's a lot to see in this piece. I like the "Starry Nights" sky in the background. Kind of plays with the idea of controlled madness. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteInteresting musings, I like the quote. This illustration truly speaks a thousand words. Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou've zeroed right in on it! And a nice illo to go along. Yes, wonderful!
ReplyDeleteA little *starry night* going on there in the background, bringing to mind another person who, at the time looked "absolutely ridiculous" and certainly NOT boring... ~~Vincent Van Gogh is now considered one of the greatest...
ReplyDeleteNow that's food for thought!
nice image and good emotion as well.
.
Lovely! I just saw the play of Pratchett's comic novel Wyrd Sisters (based on Hamlet and Macbeth) and this reminds me of poor sincere Verence, the fool.
ReplyDeleteThanks for leaving a comment on my blog. Your illustration are really great! Keep it up!
