Inspired by the Illustration Friday challenge word: Surveillance
I had made a note of this weeks I.F. prompt as usual and then forgot all about it in the flurry of end-of-the-week and all that brings with it.
Yesterday I moved my paints from the middle of the house (working on the dining room table while life happens around me is one of my favourite ways to layer the day in to whatever is happening in my drawings) to the studio - where things were brighter.
Foremost in my mind was the idea - to paint how it feels to not quite belong. Often, feeling an outsider, one ends up observing from a distance.

Looking at this portrait of a girl (and in the same time from speakers sounds de cara a la pared by Lhasa.) .... this girl is sad, you see it in her eyes ...... and the distance to the "subject" she is observing seems to be unreachable.....muted color pallet strengthens and complements the whole picture.... you nailed it
ReplyDeleteGood work, AA!
Thanks, LT. Glad to know what I had in mind comes across. Lhasa De Sela? A favourite of mine. Con Toda Palabra top of my personal list.
Deleteindeed!! one of my favorits too!!!
DeleteYou really captured the sadness. Very thoughtful take on the prompt and nicely done!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty face half in shadow. She does seem sad and separate, and hidden.
ReplyDeleteHi again and thanks so much for your visit! The white pen I mentioned is a Signo Uniball gel pen. It tends to clog a bit at the tip but is the best opaque white liner I've found for pen and ink (as an alternative to a brush and white paint). :)
DeleteThank you C! I'll look out for it. The brush and white paint never seem to cover properly.

DeletePerfectly captured what you set out to!
ReplyDeleteYour last post was so happy, and this so sad. Emotions often make art so much more than whatever is put on the paper. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHi Linda. Strange, though I painted a sad moment, hope it doesn't make the viewer feel sad... I feel rather that in recognizing a sad memory in ourselves, we might be more likely to recognize it in another's face or stance - and empathize. Be human together.
ReplyDeleteYou've captured this so very well! Sad and watchful. Nice.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, that old feeling of not quite belonging. Been there many times. But I never thought to hide behind an elephant's leg. That would be cool, but then everyone would be looking my way, I guess.
ReplyDeleteNow you know why I don't belong. I'm weird. :)
Obviously in this weird company you DO belong... with those of us who hide behind elephants legs and other portable screens.
DeleteThis is beautiful! So thoughtful and sad.
